This is a great solution, if you got sick of it you could always paint it in a straight black lacquer, or any other colour for that matter.

I received an email earlier this week announcing that the Missoni Kartell chair [left] was in stock at Space Furniture.

Searching for a larger image than was in the email led me to this site where I discovered the sister chair, Mademoiselle Missoni, which is a little more my style.

They also have a range of personalised Louis Ghost chairs with images of a child, a chinese woman, bear or mask [pictured] to choose from.

Not surprisingly, I was in among the 41% of people who are 'Switzerland' when it comes to a major committment such as painting your home.

WOW: Antler Magazine

Every once in a while, something comes along and makes you stop and say ....wow! Today, that was Antler Magazine. I'm particularly excited that this online magazine is so user friendly and easy to read. The format is great, the layout stunning and the content outstanding, not to mention carbon neutral.

Some of the highlights from the first issue for me;

Gorgeous 'tiny gardens' from Charlotte Cramer [pic above]. Wonderfully whimsical and a lovely escape back to childhood.

Love the Skunkboy Creatures [pp 26-27]. there are couple of little ones in my life for whom these would be perfect. How gorgeous is this quote from their Etsy store;

Skunkboy Creatures don't care what you look like... we love you for you. We embrace the fact that you always have your nose in a book, or you can't have a decent conversation unless it's about music, or the only thing that you really enjoy in life is writing, or painting, or sewing, or playing your accordion. We love all your quirks. Let's be best friends.

There there is the fabulous work from The Paper Apartment featured on pp 38-39.

And lastly, the sublime art from Mary Ann Wakeley.

Lots more to explore in the issue [and plenty of new blogs to read], but these were my first glance 'loves'. Andi Strand, both the Editor In Chief and Art Director of the magazine has done an amazing job, I can't wait to get my eyeballs on the next issue, out April 15th.

We had a long weekend here in WA yesterday and I caught up on my reading, namely pouring over the latest edition of Inside Out magazine which featured the talented Shannon Fricke.

I've been a reader of Shannon's columns, books and most recently her blog for over a year now and absolutely love her style, approach and attitude to life. It was lovely and inspiring to read about her gorgeous home in Inside Out, and get the low down on the entire renovation on her blog here and here.

"My Book Series is an exploration into stories, stories of the past, stories that are vivid reminders of beginnings. In a series of small, self-contained, conceptual pieces, my focus has turned to the sculptural use of books. I methodically carve each page and minimally design the surface. This was one of my favourite images from Apartment Therapy's SF House Tour: Lisa's Creative Apartment. The apartment has a lovely sense of induvidality and you get the feeling that this interior really is a reflection of the owner's personality.

The space is practical and long lived in and manages to be both comfortable and stylish at the same time.

This website is the greatest! Very original and a nice to see someone doing it a little differently. I love the concept of their 'footpath gallery' details below;

we love to utilize our windows as a creative outlet. we’ve filled the window with dirt and grown cheap lawn seed, watching it sprout and grow out of control during spring time (I say cheap because it grew in a lovely shade of fluoro green!!). one time we had a super 8 film looped over reels ‘floating’ in the window. at night time the projector would play the film so passers-by could engage in a ‘remedy cinema’ experience with a soundtrack of john cale. every few months we provide the footpath gallery for the public and invite artists to hijack our window space for a few weeks. over the past years we’ve had all sorts of results, from whimsical to political, and everything in between.

They have a gorgeous range of products and one particular range where all the designs come from drawings by children aged 3 to 7 years and are from underprivileged slum communities in India. This initiative gives these children a chance to just be kids, to draw and create instead of working. Once the designs are chosen they are then hand sewen by traditional Katchchhi women artisans from the remote desert communities of Western Gujarat, India.

I think I may have found the perfect pressie for Finn's 2nd birthday.

Judging a book by its cover

It was the cover of this book, Julie & Julia that I noticed yesterday in the book store - and then became interested in the content. [sorry about the qual of the image - i've been searching everywhere for a better version].

I'm now intruigued by the story, excerpt from Amazon below;

Julie & Julia is the story of Julie Powell's attempt to revitalize her marriage, restore her ambition, and save her soul by cooking all 524 recipes in Julia Child's Mastering the Art of French Cooking, Volume I, in a period of 365 days. Rented inspiration

As I'm currently renting, I'm always inspired when I come across beautiful spaces in which the owners have managed to get around some of the limitations that not owning your property can provide.

I love this apartment, which was the Northwest finalist in Apartment Therapy's Small Cool 2008.

The House at Hautefage

In the heart of France's epicentre of food and wine, nestled between two medieval villages, a 19th century farmhouse has been restored to award winning magnificence. Original beams and floors of old wood and terracotta meet specially sourced design classics and bespoke furnishings behind the shutters and thick stone walls of The House at.. Hautefage.

This guesthouse, in the heart of the French countryside, is a delicious mix of old French farmhouse, vintage style and modern interiors. Not surprisingly The House... at is a popular location for film and photographic shoots and was awarded wallpaper* magazines's Best Rural Retreat in 2006.

The House At, as it’s known, is the work of interiors and furniture designer Jason Maclean and his business partner Amanda Gillis, of London deli and restaurant Villandry. The pair discovered a ramshackle French farmhouse in Lot-et-Garonne three years ago and decided to create somewhere simple that they could enjoy themselves and let to friends. And while the final work is an exercise in restraint, it is clear that Maclean and Gillis quickly developed bigger ambitions. [wallpaper*]

Lyn Gardener

I first discovered Lyn Gardner in a feature called 'Circle of Friends' in the March 2003 issue of Vogue E&T ...which I am going to try and dig out. Her exquisite styling for the piece, which was a casual lunch with close girlfriends, still sticks in my memory and I was overjoyed to have come across her beautiful home in the current issue of Australian Home Beautiful.

It was whilst looking for more info on Lyn and her store Empire 111 that I stumbled across the blog Villa Anna, and her piece on Lyn's amazing transformation of an old mattress factory into gorgeous private retreat that reflects her style and talent for creating beautiful interior spaces.

Re-inspired

I can hardly believe that its been so long since I've posted here. For many reasons, I've not been in the right space to commit to this blog and recording the things that move me.

During this time I've moved back to my home town in Perth, and whilst its something that's on my list of 'things to do' I am determined to explore the city and share the wonderful things that I find.

Whilst I may not have been posting here I have be voraciously reading many blogs and my beloved magazines - the love has, and always be there for beautiful things and interior spaces.

I look forward to sharing some of them with you again.

I love the philosophy and passion behind this loft renovation in San Diego, California which was featured in Dwell. Being a rental, the owners have had to ensure that everything is removable, but have succeeded in communicating their personal style, a great design aesthetic and demonstrated that style and functionality are not mutually exclusive.

Opus @ The Richardson

Whist this image does the restaurant absolutely no justice - I can vouch for the quality of dining experience which at Opus.

Melbourne HIA Home Show

This is my favourite room from the Home Beautiful Design Precinct at the HIA Home Show. The designer is Ann Ramsdale of Red Coral Designs and I love the simplicity of the colour scheme, cleverly balanced with unique pieces, patterns and textures.

Appreciation for the past

Last weekend I was at home in Perth for a family celebration. Whilst catching up with Mum, she mentioned that she wanted to sell her set of Denby Langely Mayflower crockery on Ebay.

I can recall this set from years ago when I thought it was so ugly, old fashioned and clunky [I was under 11 years old and clearly didn't have an appreciation for one of the 70's most popular homewares designs]. Not knowing where to start in terms of pricing the full set that they want to offload we jumped online and found Dig Modern which specialises in vintage modern books about architecture, interiors, gardening, graphic design and other design professions and are especially fond of mid-century modern.
They have a wonderful range and also provide further links for you to explore and uncover your own modern treasures. Lets just say I have grown to appreciate the set and I'm sure it will fetch a pretty penny. Images from Dig Modern.

Yesterday one of my favourite regular reads The Bargain Queen posted Style means embracing your ‘flaws’

This post raises some very valid issues. Our lives are so highly influenced, organised and sometimes regimented to the point of the ridiculous. The most stylish peole around are usually those that do not give a toss, so to speak. They break the rules because they are comfortable.... in their own skin, with their own thoughts, ideas and ambitions.

Perhaps its this quality that makes them inspirational people? Maybe letting go a little more and trusting that inner voice is the key to really acheive one's dreams and goals?

Collectors Items

Since time began people have been 'taken with' or attracted to objects that they have felt the need to collect them. Be it rare coins, porcelain or artwork by an inspiration artist or a collection of glassware from the sixties, and other popular culture icons.

What drives people to create such a collection fascinates me. Its something I've often thought about doing, but my minimalist sensibilities and desire not to clutter to the enth degree have always hindered my progress on this lifetime habit. On recent overseas trips [europe and US] I began to collect 5 x 7in sized photographs that captured the spirit of the place in which I was visiting. For pursuit at a later time [and when I have an appropriate space to house them] are some other interests;

Australian Home Beautiful - April 07 Issue

I just saw this 'world first issue' in the newsagents and wished I had had some $$ with me so I could have taken it home with me there and then. See below article from B & T for more details.

Home Beautiful claims world first - Tim Addington [edited version]

The Australian edition of Home Beautiful is claiming a world first – textured wallpaper on its front and back covers. Every copy of the monthly glossy which features green flocked leaves snaking across the covers, had to be screen printed by hand meaning the magazine had to go to press a full month ahead of time.

While textured applications are know to have been done on books, Home Beautiful believe it is a first for a magazine. Editor Wendy Moore said the extra cost of performing the operation was met by furniture retailer Domayne who sponsored the execution.

I only time for a quick flick through but noticed an article on the home of an interior designer in Perth and feature on a gorgeous Danish interior.

The current Mar/Apr 07 issue of Inside Out magazine features 'Castle in the Sand' [pg 154] about an amazing home in Essaouria, Morroco. Parts of the house [particularly the kitchen and bathroom] have a very Dinosaur Designs feel. I love the use of white - against such a background the simple, yet stylish furniture this couple have chosen adds subtle and exepected colour and lines which contrast with the traditional lines of the home.

The March issue of Madison carries a story on two Australian girls who have made Marakesh their home and the base for their label Kasbek. The home is slightly more traditional but features the same clean lines, light and wonderful spaces like the central courtyard [not to mention the devine tiles]. I believe Kasbek is currently stocked by Orson & Blake.

Stella.....

Oh how the word Stella now has such a different meaning for me now, than it did 10 years ago. A decade ago, my girlfriend and I would meet at the London in Balmain and over schooners of Stella would moan, whinge and carry on about our lives - standard girly stuff really [men, jobs, money and sex].

Fastforward to 2007 and Australia was this week gripped by Stella fever. Much was written about Stella McCartney's line for the Aussie Target. A fasionista I am not, but I do love fashion, beauty and magazines and avidly read all the celebrity, fashion and interior design blogs i can [what else would I do with my time at a job i can't stand?] Had I been one of the thousands lining up on Monday morning to nab a Stella number I think I would have ultimately been left holding an item I was seriously considering buying for the label when a) it wasn't my size and b) I wouldn't know what the hell to wear it with.

But, nonetheless great coverage, a coup for the once daggy Target and great for us wannabes on a budget : ) Anyway, my closest store [Broadway] opens on April 5 with a full line....see you in line!

Collette Dinnigan

Strong, creative, career focussed women inspire me - and when it comes to Australian fashion, Collette Dinnigan is someone whome I have long admired. Drive and determination are just some of the amazing qualities that shine through in many successful women and something that I feel energised by. Her personal style is understated and belies the creative force that has grown her business from its humble beginnings in the lingerie market.

David Jones Winter 07 Launch

I was cursing the traffic as I drove down George Street last night. My 20 minute trip home from work slowly turned into a torturous hour long journey in which I regressed into my college nickname of roadrage spice.

The hold up was the DJ's winter launch at Town Hall, and of course I was stuck behind the guests of honour slowly edging their way down the road - not wanting to arrive a) too early to be fashionable; b) to arrive un-noticed by the crown gathered; or my personal fave..... c) to piss me off considerably! Once I cottoned on to what was going on I was rubbernecking with the best of them, hoping to catch a glimpse of some of Australian Fashion royalty.

Anyway to check out the show go to the Vogue Australia site. There was nothing that took my breath away, but there were a couple of nice pieces.

Light, bright & airy

After living in Norway as a teenager for 3 years with my family I developed an appreciation for Scandinavian design and the Nordic aesthetic. There are elements of this renovation, in Sydney’s Eastern suburbs, which I felt echoed some popular Scandinavian trends. Blonde timber [in this case bamboo] has been used to harness as much natural light as possible and adds a brightness, which along with the use of a white palette, is repeated throughout the house.

Accents of red add colourful detail from the kitchen island kickboard, through to the placement of various accessories and treasures throughout the home. Against the backdrop of white walls and blond timber, these simple but effective touches communicate the style and personality of the owners. The subtle marble bench top in the kitchen adds another feature texture to the existing colour palette and helps to break up the use of white.

The pieces of furniture add contrast [and sometimes colour] by providing interesting shapes, softening the minimalist lines used throughout the dining/kitchen area. Space has been maximised by the use of simply styled furniture and additional storage in the downstairs living area. The modest dining table fits neatly in the area under the stairs – making use of this space, but not overpowering it.

A floating staircase structure continues the clean lines of the living room and kitchen up to the second level, which further adds to the airy feel of the area. Three large white light shades are suspended from the ceiling by the stairs and help to balance the strong simple lines of the stairs and bookshelf storage and display area on the landing at the top of the stairs.

Outdoor Serenity

Cool down, chill out and relax in this clever use of outdoor living within a confined area. This contemporary inner city oasis shows the clever use of limited space to successfully create an idyllic place to relax, entertain or cool down in the plunge pool. The result is a very private, enclosed outdoor entertaining area.

The muted tones of slate, grey concrete and blue convey a cool feeling of serenity, which blends with the organic green tones used throughout the garden. The use of timber in the outdoor setting compliments the earthy feel of the stone water feature and softens the effect of use of stone and concrete.

The floating concrete staircase provides an interesting element to the visual plane and its location above the pool is challenging and unexpected. The resulting reflection adds further depth and perspective to the space.

By using a variety plants, the owners have provided a focal point above the pool that adds to the depth of this small space. The minimalism of the entertaining and pool area is balanced by the lush, jungle like garden that resides above.

The simple lines of the timber setting are repeated in the small deck in the back left hand corner of the pool, which contrasts the organic shapes created by the garden.

The use of the timber matting above the table / entertaining area is fitted with a ceiling fan which gives the area a tropical cabana feel and the slick indoor / outdoor theme is echoed by the use of mosaic tiles lining the left and back wall of the courtyard.

Living in Opulent Times

I’ve never considered myself a fan of romantic styles or the terribly popular shabby chic decorating trend. However, for as long as I can remember I have been fascinated by history, tradition and their influence on modern life, design and decorating trends. Throughout my late teens and twenties I was fortunate to visit, and see first hand the opulence, elegance and old world beauty that has been maintained in the Châteaux’s of France and England’s grand manor houses and palaces. During these experiences it was almost impossible for me not to imagine the lives and loves of the people who once resided in these homes that have stood the test of time over centuries.

When I came across these photos I felt a connection with the rooms and the fabulous attention to detail that has been displayed. Perhaps even more fascinating is that this is not a set to a movie, shop front or magazine shoot, this is the living space of a creative and passionate individual who has combined a love of design and the everyday function of living.

The space is romantic and elegant with subtle attention to detail, which renders the rooms within the apartment with an authentic feel and is in keeping with the overall style and theme. The use of light and muted tones in the chosen furniture, fabric and accessories adds to the natural light that flows into the apartment. Occasional lamps and numerous chandeliers offer additional light and highlight the use of curiously shaped, and other mismatched pieces that reflect the light.

Collections of treasures and antiques are beautifully displayed and, as the owner attests, are not for display but everyday use. It is an enviable concept, using one’s ‘best’ for everyday occasions, and inspires one to live in the moment and enjoy the design and experiences that inspire us on a daily basis. Balance and proportion have been used so that these special items have their own stage, however no one item overpowers another, rather they complement and appear as if they have always stood side by side.

Whilst being elegant and polished, the apartment has a cosy, lived in feel. One almost feels as if they are transported back to another era, like stepping into a time capsule.

Wooden floorboards and textured painted walls add to the warm, depth and an authentic feel to the apartment, whilst traditional period style furniture is used throughout. A variety of textures and colours has been employed with the chosen upholstery, accessories and bed linen, many of which is the owners own design.

Reminiscent of an opulent time where time in the home was primarily enjoyed in the company of friends and family. This home has a sense of balance and harmony, encouraging the viewer to take in the entire scene as one coordinated elegant space, or feast their eyes on the myriad little details that contribute to the feeling that this home exudes.

About the direction my life is taking. For many years I have stifled a passion for interiors, magazines and great design. Whilst my career in Marketing and recently Advertising has pandered to this slight obsession I have decided that in this, my 30th year I will focus on creating a career out of this wonderful industry.

I've enrolled in an online interior decoration course - only 12 weeks as a starting point to realising my larger dreams. As I work full time and have a mortgage on a single income, a University or TAFE course committment would not have been possible.

I also wanted to start this blog as a record of all the things that I love and inspire me to keep on reaching for that ultimate goal.
